I never really felt like an artist until I started making Brart. I think that design, craft, and art are three different things. I did a lot of theatre design but I wasn’t always sure it was art. I’ve made a lot of crafts and perfected technical ability but wasn’t sure if it was art. In my mind, design is a series of informed choices to make something with purpose. Craft is a practice of perfecting a technical skill and artisanship, while art is an expression of an idea. The only definition of art that I’ve ever felt actually worked was from my internship at Pangea World Theatre. Art is where philosophy and discipline intersect. In my 20’s I felt like I was working on a lot of disciplines, but didn’t really understand what my philosophy was that defined me and made me different.
Ashoka forged her own path. (If you haven’t watched Clone Wars, stop reading now as there are spoilers) Ashoka was learning the Jedi ways until the structure turned on her, accused her for a crime she didn’t do, and made her a fugitive. Eventually her name was cleared and she was offered to come back into the Jedi Order. With her faith shaken in the order, she couldn’t go back to the Jedi order so she paved her own path. She had a stronger sense of self and an inherent sense of knowing when a situation was right or wrong that she didn’t need the Jedi Order to dictate how and when to act. May all artists be so lucky that they find this kind of sense of self that they can step away from the main stream and forge their own path. When you don’t need an external entity for validation, you can just create and express because you know it is right and true. I have forged my own path with Brart. It embraces sustainable and feminist topics that I know define my artistic philosophy while building and technical visual skills I have learned all my life. Brart has allowed me to express a point of view through a sustainable method. It has created community and conversation that didn’t otherwise exist.
