I made this portrait of Margaret Thatcher as lobby art for Theatre Pro Rata's production of Top Girls. Written by Carol Churchill, "The play examines the roles available to women in modern society, and what if means or takes for a woman to succeed. It also dwells heavily on the cost of ambition and the influence of Thatcherite politics on feminism....Churchill has stated that the play was inspired by her conversations with American feminists: it comments on the contrast between American feminism, which celebrates individualistic women who acquire power and wealth, and British socialist feminism, which involves collective group gain." - Top Girls - Wikipedia
Margaret Thatcher and feminism put in the same sentence is a complicated situation. She was the first female Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, but she is also known for her conservative approached that halted many progressive social movements and programs. If you are unfamiliar with her politics, the LA Progressive News Letter describes her, "As with her ideological and political soul-mate, Ronald Reagan, her aggressive advocacy of both free-market economics and nationalist foreign policy established new parameters in her country's politics" - Margaret Thatcher Dead at 87 (laprogressive.com) I collected about 60 bras from this bra box. May this brart forever inspire conversation on what feminism and success mean to each of us.
