Theatre in the Round - Trailblazing Women - March 2024
Mae C. Jemison (1956-Present) was born in Decatur, Alabama, and raised in Chicago, Illinois. At the age of 16, Jemison double majored in Chemical Engineering and African American Studies at Stanford University, and medicine at Cornell. Jemison became an engineer, physician and NASA astronaut. An avid dancer, she brought an Alvin Ailey dance poser along on her mission. She is the first African American female astronaut. Jemison was obsessed with Star Trek and is the only person to be a guest star on the Starship Enterprise and fly in actual space. She left NASA only a year after her mission, and went on to found the Dorothy Jemison Foundation for Excellence, named after her mother, a nonprofit that advocates for minorities in STEM. All I can say is live long and prosper Mae C. Jemison.
