Lena Smith (1885-1966) was born in Lawrence, Kansas, eventually moving to Minnesota as a young adult. She was the first African American woman lawyer in Minnesota and was the first female president of the Minneapolis chapter of the NAACP. She was also a real estate agent and worked against housing and employment discrimination for African Americans. Her home in south Minneapolis is on the National Registry of Historic Places.
