I have a lot of bra cups with foam. It can be difficult to figure out what to do with the foam. I was actually pretty skeptical that I'd achieve this one well, but I want to try and use the foam cup of the bra, not just the fabric. Faces are hard, and I was really pleased with how Rosie's face turned out.

When I got the gallery space at Urban Growler, I knew I wanted to do a Wonder Woman series, since Urban Growler has some images of wonder woman already in the tap room. When I was reading more about Wonder Woman, I read that she has a twin sister, Nubia. There are some different interpretations if she is a twin sister or an ally. You can read more about Nubia at the Fandom link below.

Like Margaret Thatcher, I wanted to put her on an old cabinet door, to play on the idea that cabinet has multiple meanings.
Simone Biles represents strength. Not just physical endurance, but mental stability and an ability to stand by what she believes in. When I got this red rhinestone bra, I knew it had to be used in Simone's portrait.
I made this portrait of Margaret Thatcher as lobby art for Theatre Pro Rata's production of Top Girls. Written by Carol Churchill, "The play examines the roles available to women in modern society, and what if means or takes for a woman to succeed. It also dwells heavily on the cost of ambition and the influence of Thatcherite politics on feminism....Churchill has stated that the play was inspired by her conversations with American feminists: it comments on the contrast between American feminism, which celebrates individualistic women who acquire power and wealth, and British socialist feminism, which involves collective group gain." - Top Girls - Wikipedia
Margaret Thatcher and feminism put in the same sentence is a complicated situation. She was the first female Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, but she is also known for her conservative approached that halted many progressive social movements and programs. If you are unfamiliar with her politics, the LA Progressive News Letter describes her, "As with her ideological and political soul-mate, Ronald Reagan, her aggressive advocacy of both free-market economics and nationalist foreign policy established new parameters in her country's politics" - Margaret Thatcher Dead at 87 (laprogressive.com) I collected about 60 bras from this bra box. May this brart forever inspire conversation on what feminism and success mean to each of us. I've had this yellow color for a while and thought that it really matches the Girl with the Pearl Earring painting. I think this piece is proof that you can be a masterpiece and a work in progress at the same time. I didn't capture something in the eyes in this painting, but I learned something from it. This is my first brart on a small art panel. A lot of my brart is on 2'x2' or bigger. This is on a 9"x12" panel, so it is much smaller.

Urban Growler is the first woman owned micro-brewery in Minnesota. They have some Wonder Woman art in the brewery already. I'm hoping to create a series of Wonder Woman images.

She immediately got alot of commentary that she was wearing an expensive dress and was being a hypocrite. Her response was 'The message is in the medium" YES. YES, AOC. THE MESSAGE IS IN THE MEDIUM. AOC had always been on my list, but I developed a visual for her brart in that moment.
I once heard a quote that said "the difference between a good painting and a great painting is a few brush strokes." I think this is a great example of a few brush strokes making a huge impact on a piece of art. I try and take progress shots for a piece. Nina Simone on old piano pieces.
My general process is to trace out a portrait in pencil or marker. I usually make the portrait very shortly after I trace it. Nina sat in my living room for a few weeks. I was somewhere between intimidated and really wanting to make sure I had a clear vision for this portrait. Nina Simone had so many challenges in life that I really felt like this portrait had to be spot on. I'm very pleased with how this likeness turned out. |
